Raw materials

Wood fibre, either virgin or recycled, is the main raw material used in making tissue paper. Wood is a renewable natural resource, and at the end of tissue paper's life cycle the majority of the original fibres are returned to nature.

Our virgin fibres are hardwood and softwood fibres that we buy from pulp mills certified to ISO 14001 standards. The benefits of clean fibres include good absorption capacity and a soft, durable end product.

The criteria for Nordic Swan eco-labelling recommends that the raw material for virgin fibre-based paper should come from certified forests. All virgin fibre-based raw material used in Metsä Tissue's Katrin products comes from certified forests, which also guarantees that it does not come from illegal sources. Metsä Tissue is committed to supporting sustainable forest management based on sound ecological science, social responsibility and economic viability.

Recycled fibre pulp is made from recycled newspapers, magazines, and office paper. Metsä Tissue uses equal amounts both primary and recycled fibre as the main raw material for tissue paper products. Recycled fibres do not have the same absorption capacity as virgin fibres, and one kilogram of used newspapers can produce around 650-700g of finished tissue paper product.
