Mills and environmentally friendly processes

Metsä Tissue’s mills in Finland, Germany, Sweden and Poland have a joint capacity of 455,000 tonnes of tissue paper per year. All our mills have a quality management system that fulfils the ISO 9001 standard an environmental management system fulfilling the ISO 14001 standard.

An external auditor approves the quality and environmental management systems, which guarantees that those measures are well controlled and we continuously conduct development work for the benefit of the environment and our customers.

At our mills we, have made extensive environmental investments. Environmental aspects are taken into consideration in all new investments, and in many cases employing new machinery is better for the environment. Our primary goals are to reduce emissions, energy and water consumption, and to utilise the sludge from recovered fibre pulp. Some examples of our environmental investments:

  • The investments in the Mänttä mills in 2002 led to a 30 per cent reduction in water consumption in paper production. Also, the amount of sludge from the de-inking process deposited as landfill was considerably reduced.

  • At the Kreuzau and Raubach mills we initiated an energy-saving programme with the aim of reducing the consumption of electricity, steam, gas and water. The mill in Kreuzau increased its use of recovered sludge as energy waste, which led to less use of fossil fuels.

  • The Katrinefors mill began to incinerate sludge from the de-inking process at the mill’s energy station to a greater extent. Up to 97 per cent of the sludge is used as energy.

  • The Nyboholm and Pauliström mills are continuing their development projects, which aim to improve water circulation in paper production. The goal is a 10-15 per cent reduction in water consumption.
